A source is considered a noncriminal and reliable source of information, may be an official in the government, and hopefully is not associated with a politicized administration.
Administration insiders should be quoted by name, but government staff may be anonymous, especially if they are being pressured to lie and fear for losing their jobs if they do not lie or if they know about who is lying.
Deep throat was an FBI agent who as an anonymous source helped bring down the Nixon Administration.
The FBI is usually more reliable as a source than the staff member of the top government official or Commander in Chief, positions that tend to be highly politicized and most controlled by government contractors or the elite. <

Lawlessness and fabricated stories and even physical evidence that are the basis of information for a story can be obvious because intimidation, even murder, can be the result of no spreading false information or propaganda.
Sometimes conformation of information should be done using mostly physical evidence and only some use of at least two confirming sources, especially in very technical cases.
If the physical evidence seems in complete opposition to the information of the sources, who do not want to be identified, then their identity should be confirmed and perhaps exposed to the public.
All wartime stories may be propaganda controlled by the administration.
Some think even missile strikes, especially so-called surgical strikes, have been fabricated.
Corrupt sources are almost always the cause of propaganda.
The media may be controlled or owned by corrupt sources.
Corrupt sources may find media personalities easy to manipulate and/or enjoy manufacturing the news.
